Overview

This itinerary begins with a few days in Antigua enjoying this stunning colonial town with magnificent backdrop of three volcanoes. Enjoy walking around its cobbled streets, learning about their traditions and fully immersing in their food scene.

Next you will transfer to the stunning Lake Atitlan, which formed 20,000 after a massive volcanic eruption. You will visit the town of San Juan renowned for its beautiful and colourful weaving and textiles. Then learn how to prepare tortillas at Casa Palopo on the lake.

Fly to Flores in the northern Peten region of Guatemala to visit the highly excavated Yaxha and Tikal Mayan Ruins, which are set within protected rainforest. You can climb the temples, learn about the history and the architecture as well as spotting wildlife.

You can then fly back to Guatemala City for your international flight, or continue your journey into the beautiful Belize.

Day to Day

Below is an example day by day itinerary

Day 1

Met on arrival and transferred to Antigua and to Meson de Maria, a small hotel in a central location, close to the restaurants and shops and has a small roof terrace with views of the volcanoes that surround Antigua. Overnight Meson de Maria (B).

Day 2

This morning take a guided walk around the town to see the La Merced church, the cathedral and the ruins of the San Francisco monastery that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. After lunch, you will stroll around and try different foods from different stalls and markets. Overnight Meson de Maria (BL)

Day 3

Today you will learn how to prepare a traditional Guatemalan dish in a small town called San Miguel Escobar on the outskirts of Antigua. Then transfer nearby to the Agua volcano to visit a farmer's house where you learn about the traditional way to process and roast the coffee. Overnight Meson de Maria (BL)

Day 4

This morning you will do a chocolate workshop where you will learn how to brew, toast and grind the cacao into chocolate. After you will transfer to Lake Atitlan. Overnight Hotel Atitlan (B).

Day 5

Today you will visit San Juan, famous for its naif art galleries, town murals and natural dyes textiles. In the afternoon, you will visit the tortilla bar at Casa Palopo and learn how to make tortillas. Overnight Hotel Atitlan (BL).

Day 6

Day at leisure. Overnight Hotel Atitlan (B).

Day 7

Return to Guatemala City and fly to Flores in the northern region of Guatemala. Transfer by vehicle to the your lodge in Flores. Overnight Villa Maya (B)

Day 8

Yaxha is an archaeological site and ancient ceremonial center of Mayan civilization situated in the northeast of Peten. With more than 500 structures in the site, including 40 steles, 13 altars and 9 pyramids this site is a must when visiting the area. On arrival, your guide will show you the layout and main temples. End the day watching an amazing sunset on the top of the pyramid. Overnight Villa Maya (B).

Day 9

Today you will visit the Tikal Mayan Ruins located within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, a conservation area of over two million hectares. You can climb the temples, learn about the architecture and the history of this site and spot monkeys, parrots, macaws, and toucans. Overnight Villa Maya (BL)

Day 10

Transfer to Flores Airport to take short flight back to Guatemala City or extend your itinerary into Belize for a few days (B).
