Overview

Head inland to stay at an eco-lodge with a stunning location on the banks of the Macal River, surrounded by palms and brightly coloured tropical birds, you can enjoy adventure by the day and relax and reconnect with nature at the lodge. Enjoy a guided visit to nearby mayan ruins of Xunantunich, take a guided birdwalk and grab an inner tube to float on the river. You may see toucans, hear howler monkeys, spot frogs and many more wildlife in the rainforest surrounds. *Upgrade to include daytrip to see the well excavated Tikal Mayan Ruins across the border in neighbouring Guatemala or venture into sacred mayan cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal, both deep in the jungle.

Then transfer by vehicle to the southern mainland coast to the vibrant town of Placencia at the end of a 16 mile peninsula where coral reefs and tiny cayes are a 25 minute boat ride away. Stay at the luxury Chabil Mar Villas, a short walk or cycle from town where there are bars and restaurants, relax on the sandy beach or swim in one of their two infinity pools. Guests have complimentary use of kayaks and stand up paddle boards. *Optional excursions could include snorkelling from a tropical palm island and then having a picnic lunch, boat trips to the nearby mangroves to spot manatees and howler monkeys, or venturing further south on the mainland to experience chocolate making and mayan villages.

Day to Day

Below is an example day by day itinerary

Day 1

Fly from London to US. Overnight in nearby airport hotel (Room only).

Day 2

Met on arrival in Belize and transferred in an air-conditioned vehicle to the western Cayo region of Belize. Stay in a beautiful eco-lodge on the banks of the Macal River where in the afternoon you will take a guided hike along the onsite trails where you may see toucans, motmots and tanagers and other wildlife. Overnight Mystic River (D).

Day 3

Relax and enjoy the rainforest surrounds at the lodge, take an inner tube and float on the scenic Macal River. *Optional excursions could include jungle horseriding, hiking to a waterfall, spa treatment. Overnight Mystic River (BD).

Day 4

Today you will visit the nearby Xunantunich Mayan Ruins. These fascinating ruins can be visited on a half day trip and have well excavated Mayan structures including a high temple with interesting Mayan hieroglyphs, affording views across to Guatemala from the top. Learn about the ancient Maya way of life at this site including the ball court where the ball game played by the Mayas is believed to have had devastating consequences for the loser! Day 5

Transfer by vehicle to the town of Placencia to stay at Chabil Mar Villas, a collection of spacious one and two bedroom villas on a beautiful stretch of beach and close to the town. Guests can take complimentary bikes into town, or paddle an ocean kayak or stand up paddle board on the calm waters where you may be joined by a pelican, dolphin or even a manatee. Day 6

Today you will visit the picturesque island Laughing Bird Caye. Guided snorkelling trips occur around the island where you can see soft and hard coral formations, and an array of colourful tropical reef fish that could include sergeant majors, shoals of blue tangs, butterfly fish and angel fish. You may also see stingrays, eagle rays, nurse sharks and other larger marine life. A full daytrip usually includes bbq lunch on the island before a second snorkel in the afternoon. Day 7

Day at leisure. *Optional excursions could include snorkelling on the barrier reef, daytrip to a tiny palm dotted island with lunch, spotting manatees in the mangroves and howler monkeys in the tropical forest on a Monkey River boat trip, visiting the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, venturing into the lesser visited Toledo region for chocolate making, or a cultural experience in a Mayan village. Overnight Chabil Mar (B).

Day 8

Day 10

Day 11

Take a short propeller flight back to Belize International Airport to connect with your international flight back home (B).
